Mark your calendars and gather your blunt knives, hoovers, and coffee machines—the Repair Café is returning to Tervuren on Saturday, 2 November.
The original aim of the Repair Café movement was to revive repair skills that were once commonplace. “Unfortunately, we’ve all kind of forgotten that,” says Mylène De Scheemaecker, one of the driving forces behind Repair Café in Tervuren. “Through the Repair Café, you can teach some people to repair certain things—think of a flat bicycle tyre or sewing on a button.”
However, the Repair Café also tackles more complex electrical repairs. “That’s a bit high to expect from everyone,” Mylène acknowledges.
The concept originated in Amsterdam in 2009. “Since then, Repair Cafés have spread everywhere,” Mylène explains in an interview with Tervuren+ earlier this year about the history of Repair Café Tervuren.
“We at Repair Café are strongly opposed to manufacturers’ tricks where products are designed to break down after a certain lifespan. Think of a printer programmed to stop working after a set number of prints.”
“Most of our repairers are self-taught,” she adds.
Entry to the Repair Café is free. If people are satisfied with the service, they can make a voluntary contribution to charity.
Don’t miss this opportunity to breathe new life into your broken items and perhaps learn a thing or two about repairs. See you on 2 November!
