Tervuren gets EU-funded passport system

Thanks to EU funds, Tervuren now has a new passport system where the photo is taken at town hall and automatically added to identity card, travel pass, Kids-ID and aliens’ cards.

“If we want to make our society safer, this has to happen at all levels of government. That is why it is important that Tervuren steps into this initiative of the FPS Foreign Affairs, paid for with European funds,” said outgoing mayor Marc Charlier.

“With the help of modern technology, photo forgery is very easy and hardly detectable anymore. It is therefore important that people’s photos and fingerprints can be taken at the counter at the same time,” said Charlier. He will continue as an alderman for the Flemish nationalist N-VA, responsible for spatial planning, mobility and culture.

Tervuren is one of more than 400 municipalities that will provide the passport photo itself. Tervurenaars will no longer have to rush to the big Carrefour or elsewhere to get their photo taken. Tervuren authorities process around 4,500 identity and travel documents every year. In 2025, town hall expects some 6,800 applications.
