Soup at official opening of Tervuren’s cycle bridge

There are still some pain points for Fietsersbond Tervuren. "The bike path just after the bridge towards Brussels is still not up to standard for a cycling highway: in the rain, it becomes a slippery mud pool and there’s barely any social control," Tervuren cyclists pointed out, referring to dangerous "missing links" in Brussels and Tervuren.

Tervurenaars, too, are invited to the inauguration of the 77.5-meter-long bridge over the Vier-Armen crossroad. The inauguration is on Thursday, December 19, from 14:30 to 18:00. There’s free soup, non-alcoholic mulled wine for cyclists, and a “surprise” gadget so you stand out on the bridge and through the dark forest in the winter months.

The Flemish construction agency, de Werkvenootschap, also promises a short guided tour of the €5.5 million bridge starting at 3 pm. Officially named the ‘F29K’, the 290-ton cycle bridge is part of the Flemish government’s goal of constructing 115 km of new cycling infrastructure along the Brussels ring road.

Safely cycling across the Ring and its busy approach roads is one of the government’s priorities. “This project has sparked a lot of debate. Some think a budget of more than €5 million is excessive. However, this is only 0.16% of the entire budget for Werken aan de Ring,” says https://www.facebook.com/FietsersbondTervuren.

The €5.5 million price tag pales in comparison to the €3.5 billion planned for the northern Brussels Ring. And this doesn’t include the €28 million spent on renovating the Leonardtunnel, built in 1976, and now causing drivers daily headaches.

There are still some pain points for Fietsersbond Tervuren. “The bike path just after the bridge towards Brussels is still not up to standard for a cycling highway: in the rain, it becomes a slippery mud pool. There’s no lighting and there’s barely any social control,” Tervuren cyclists pointed out, also pointing to other dangerous “missing links” in Brussels and Tervuren.
